Shukunegi is a village nestled at the mouth of an inlet on the Ogi Coast. It developed as a kitamaebune (merchant ship) port of call throughout the 17th century, when Sado Gold Mine was thriving. To this day, more than 100 houses with wooden walls are crowded on the small, maze-like alleys. The rows of houses in Shukunegi, made with a combination of shipbuilders' skills and techniques, are designated as a National Important Preservation Area for Traditional Buildings and Architecture. In Shukunegi, where the lives of ordinary people and history intersect, time flows slowly and serenely.
