Private House Open to the Public (Kanekoya’s Residence) Private House Open to the Public (Kanekoya’s Residence)

  • The outside walls are built using wooden ship planks, a feature unique to shipbuilders' houses.

  • Furniture on display, including sea chests, gives you insight into a shipbuilders' life.

  • The second-floor room, floored with tatami mats, was used for gatherings and meetings.

The Kaneko Family used to be shipbuilders. This house is thought to have been built in the early 19th century, when Shukunegi was at its height of prosperity. Just like other houses in Shukunegi, this house is a full, two-story house with plate walls. The skills and techniques of shipbuilders can be found everywhere; rope-and-pulley windows, for example.
